Plasma is a cell-free liquid obtained by centrifuging the whole blood that leaves the blood vessel after anticoagulation treatment. It contains fibrinogen (fibrinogen can be converted into fibrin and has a coagulation effect). When calcium ions are added to the plasma, recoagulation occurs in the plasma, so the plasma does not contain free calcium ions.

The main functions of plasma

1. Nutritional function Plasma contains a considerable amount of protein, which play the function of nutrient storage.
2. There are numerous lipophilic binding sites distributed on the huge surface of transport function proteins, which can bind to lipid-soluble substances, making them water-soluble and easy to transport

3. Buffering function Plasma albumin and its sodium salt form a buffer pair, together with other inorganic salt buffer pairs (mainly carbonic acid and sodium bicarbonate), to buffer the acid-base ratio in plasma and maintain the stability of blood pH.

4. Formation of colloid osmotic pressure The existence of plasma colloid osmotic pressure is an important condition to ensure that the water in the plasma will not be transferred to the outside of the blood vessels, so as to maintain a relatively constant blood volume.

5. Participating in the immune function of the body and playing an important role in the realization of immune function, immune antibodies, complement system, etc., are composed of plasma globulin.

6. The vast majority of plasma coagulation factors, physiological anticoagulant substances and substances that promote fibrinolysis involved in coagulation and anticoagulation functions are plasma proteins.

7. The functions of tissue growth and damaged tissue repair are achieved by the conversion of albumin into tissue proteins.
